Most other F2P games out atm are kind of a disaster. Otherwise I'd honestly just recommend buying GW2 or ESO, since they don't require a sub to play after the initial purchase. It's not a terrible game though, and you can definitely do well enough without spending a dime, just expect some heavy grinding, both while playing and AFK'ing. Don't expect to ever match a heavy paying player as a F2P either, as they just have a lot more power than you thanks to a cosmetic dusting patch. So the goal is to find an efficient farming location, the better the spot however, the more likely it is to be contested by other players.
This sounds odd at first, but mobs aren't a major threat once you get the hang of the game, and you can farm just about any set of mobs to find something of some value.
